"Despite the existing potential and state efforts to launch the food industry, Algeria has only 5000 companies operating in this sector which 162 exporters," said Ali Aris, program consultant for trade capacity building Arab countries (EnAct) during a regional forum on business opportunities in the food sector.
According to this expert, specialized companies in the food sector are mainly family type, not mastered the export process and ignore regulatory requirements.
"Only five companies regularly export," he said, noting that non-oil exports are mostly local products such as olive oil and dates, and refined sugar.
Branch of the food industry, which employs more than 140,000 workers, or 40% of the industrial labor force engaged in more than 17,100 companies, representing 50 to 55% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and industrial 40 to 45% of the value added .
The sector has the potential to export to exceed two billion dollars / year, according to the Ministry of Industry, SMEs and Investment Promotion.
The low level of non-oil exports has prompted the government to draw a national approach to promoting economic development, which seeks to exploit the natural resources of the country, import substitution and diversification of domestic production and export promotion, recalls it.
The meeting, which brought together representatives of the public and private sectors of member countries EnAct program (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia), an opportunity to discuss the challenges related to the promotion of trade in this sector especially at regional level. It is for these countries to integrate and develop the concept of export networks or centers of excellence and value chains in the context of trade agreements.
